Overview:
We are seeking a reliable Labourer to join a two‑man crew carrying out water mains installation and replacement across Oxford, Reading and Swindon.
You must live in Bournemouth, Southampton, or along the travel route to Oxford, as you will be travelling and staying away with the existing ganger.
The role involves excavation, trenching, pipe installation, backfilling and reinstatement, working outdoors in all weather, and supporting the ganger to deliver work safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with excavation and trenching for water mains replacement.
- Support installation of new water mains pipework, fittings and service connections.
- Carry out backfilling, compaction and reinstatement to required specifications.
- Use hand tools and basic civils equipment safely.
- Set up signage, barriers and temporary works where required.
- Load and unload materials, pipes and equipment.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area at all times.
- Follow ganger instructions and work effectively in a small two‑person team.
Essential Experience:
- Proven experience in groundworks, excavation or reinstatement.
- Confident working in trenches and around live utilities.
- Physically fit and able to perform heavy manual tasks.
- Good awareness of safe digging practices and site safety.
Desirable Experience:
- Previous utilities work (water, gas, electric, fibre).
- Experience with wacker plates, breakers, saws or similar tools.
- Understanding of reinstatement materials and compaction requirements.
Requirements:
- Must live in Bournemouth, Southampton, or along the route to Oxford.
- Willing to stay away during the week.
- Good timekeeping, reliability and strong work ethic.
- Driving licence preferred but not essential.
